These five songs are probably my favorite, perfect love songs of all time. I discovered most of them in the long ago, as an over-romantic, overtly poetic lad who had no fucking clue how to get a date, let alone a girlfriend. They gave inspiration and nobleness to aspiration and self-pity.
Sigh. Well it’s a lot better since then and now, for sure.
These ain’t no crooning love songs. They are idealistic in their ways, but also real and raw and genuine. At least they feel that way to me.
Danielle and I are in the midst of our 16th year together. While it’s not all love songs, sweet tarts and See’s Candy (thank god!), there’s a certainty and trust and partnership which is what you hope can come out of those initial sparks.
Each of these songs embrace and disarm sentimentality in their own way.
If you’re in the midst of fresh love, they may seem stolen from your inner thoughts. For those of us in long-term relationships they remind of the passion, emotion and care that this is all really about (and in the day-to-day of years and years, invariably we all lose sight of for some stretch or other).
And for you in the sulking corner saying it will never never ever happen—you’re wrong, bub. Keep your ideals, be and love yourself, that’s the way.
And the concept of the girl or the guy in the song that makes your stomach swoon will somehow find you—with a real face (and other body parts) and eyes that show they were looking for you all along.
